Statement from the OneRail Coalition on the Passing of Mortimer L. Downey

The OneRail Coalition is deeply saddened by the death of former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation and OneRail member, Mort Downey.

Mort’s impact on the transportation sector, particularly rail, transit and multimodal issues, will serve generations to come. We have been so grateful for his leadership, mentorship and longstanding support for OneRail. His vision and dedicated work to build a better transportation system that served all users is a lasting legacy from which we all continue to benefit.

“Mort was an incredible fount of transportation policy and politics knowledge mixed with ceaseless energy, an unmatched network of transportation leaders, and the wisdom to put all those resources to effective use,” notes OneRail Coalition Board Chair Chuck Baker.

Said OneRail Coalition founder Anne Canby, “We’ve lost an icon in the transportation world. It’s hard to think of anyone who could match Mort’s knowledge of all aspects of transportation, his ability to wade through the political thickets to reach good outcomes and who championed, taught, and mentored generations of transportation professionals, including me.”

We send our sincere condolences to his family and all who were fortunate to call him a colleague and friend.
